Another Grant County Day at the New Mexico Legislature has come and gone, and this year more than ever, county entities came together in a show of unity and organization behind the Grant County Prospectors to push for funding and policy that benefits communities in the sometimes forgotten southwest corner of the state.
“We fostered many new relationships with the various state agencies that will lead to new funding opportunities,” said Priscilla Lucero, Prospectors member and executive director of the Southwest New Mexico Council of Governments. “And there was tremendous unity among the people from our county — that was remarked upon by legislators and others on the state level.”
Prospectors, a collaborative group of community leaders who lobby at the state level on behalf of Grant County, attended a variety of Cabinet meetings and impromptu forums Wednesday with representatives from all realms of state government. One of the most productive meetings was with the deputy director of the new Outdoor Recreation Division, a subset of the New Mexico Department of Economic Development.
